Student Leadership in Choir
The Seacliff Primary School Choir has had an interesting year! Anna Theodosi, our Performing Arts teacher, runs the Choir. As part of the process of learning this year’s repertoire, Mrs Theodosi would ask a couple of students from the Choir to run the vocal warm ups while she prepared the backing music.
Some students enjoyed running the warm-ups so much that they were motivated to try to run a full Choir lesson!
With the support of Mrs Theodosi and the Accompanist, Julie Bennett; Harriet, Alva and Delilah have had great success in teaching the choir each week, complete with planning and preparing the material that the Choir will be working on.
As well as teaching the Choir they have also choreographed a routine to go with one of the songs. In addition, they are also running vocal training sessions once a week for any Choir members who would like some extra support. Alva, Delilah and Harriet, through their commitment, have paved a new way for future Seacliff Primary School Choirs.
Hello, we are Alva, Delilah and Harriet. We have shown student leadership by teaching the Seacliff School Choir since Term 2 of this year. Apart from really enjoying teaching the Choir, there have been many advantages in the process. Here are some of them: we know what students want from a Choir; since we are students as well, we understand the students’ perspectives and opinions.
The three of us teaching the students in Choir, has helped give the Choir members a sense of achievement (achievement being one of our school values). Students are more likely to engage in a task when they have another student teaching them. Since the students are more likely to engage in a task, they are more likely to get work done. By getting work done our Choir has been able to work through many of the songs in a short amount of time.
We have thoroughly enjoyed teaching the Choir this year. The Choir members have had some ups and downs along the way, but they have worked extremely hard and are excited to perform their songs. Thank you for reading this article.
