Room 16 – Shapes, Shapes, Shapes!
During these past few weeks of term, Room 16 have been investigating shapes. We began with identifying and recognizing 2D shapes. We know 2D shapes are flat and have edges and corners. As an activity. we used pop-sticks or matchsticks to create the shapes we knew. We then labelled them with the shape name, number of sides and corners.
We also used the geoboards and the geoboard app on the iPads to make more shapes. This was a lot of fun.
We then started looking into 3D shapes. We began to recognize that 2D shapes made up 3D shapes. We started learning the names to new shapes and enjoyed seeing 3D shapes/objects around us. We know that 3D shapes have faces, edges and vertices. We looked at different solid shapes and also had a go at making our own three-dimensional shapes with matchsticks and plasticine. This was a challenge at times but we made more shapes than we thought we could! We then took photos of our work and added them to Seesaw to show our families.
As part of our Christmas craft, we used nets of different 3D shapes that we needed to cut out and put together. It was cool to see how the 2D shapes come together to make 3D shapes.
