Room 16 – Can you spot a Procedure?
Room 16 have been investigating procedures, what they are, where we can find them and how they are used in the real world. Here are some examples of where we have seen some:
- Recipes.
- Putting toys or furniture together.
- How to play games.
- How to make something.
As a class we talked about all the things that we could do well. We thought about what we were really, really good at. In fact, we thought about things that we were so good at, that we could teach someone else how to do it too. These ideas became our ‘expert list’.
Before we began writing our procedures, we looked at other authors and what they included in their procedural writing. We found they included:
- A title
- A list of what you need
- The steps on how to do it
- Numbers to label the order of the steps
- A blurb – inciting us to carry out their procedure
- A helpful hint or tip
- Pictures of what it will look like at the end or as you go
- Lots of colour
- Some big and bold parts
As we were looking though, we were also thinking about what we liked or didn’t like about other author’s procedures. These ideas helped use design our own procedures!
