Learning at Home – some teacher feedback
I asked some of our teachers for feedback about how the ‘Learning at Home’ is going from a teacher’s perspective. From the observations made below, the experience in these early stages has been largely positive and emphasizes once again the importance of parents and teachers working together to support student learning.
By Bianca Palmer: I am really impressed with how smooth the collaboration has been between myself, students and parents. I have received positive feedback from many parents in relation to the activities the children have been undertaking. They have enjoyed having a combination of both digital activities and hand outs. My students have been very excited sending me daily recordings of themselves reading in their super hero costumes. I have been checking in with students regularly and providing them with ongoing individualised activities. I have enjoyed seeing how enthusiastic the children are in showing me new skills they have been learning at home. I do look forward to seeing them all in the classroom very soon!
By Yvonne Ridge: I have been quite overwhelmed with how positively the students and parents have taken to Learning at Home. Parents have been very supportive and students have been really getting into it, often very creatively. Issues yesterday mostly centred around the technological capacity at home.
By Murray Porter: The Year 7 students have responded well to home learning. We have conducted a couple of video chats on Teams and all students appear comfortable with the home learning tasks they have been set.
By Brian Schiller: A lot of the children are getting into the online learning with great enthusiasm! They seem to be fully enjoying the suggested learning activities. These are related to learning we’ve recently done at school. We’re seeing music videos, sport videos, environmental videos, content about Aboriginal & TSI cultures, maths, writing and beautiful art. One thing that I’m really pleased about is the very positive and active classroom community that the children are creating on Seesaw. They are leaving each other genuinely positive comments and are clearly being spurred on by each other’s posts and efforts. It is very easy to leave feedback for children on Seesaw and also easy to access and see their creations and work samples. It’s going well. Parents seem to be up with my expectations and are being very supportive, although I think the children are doing most of it independently.
By Sally Wood: Yesterday went well with great support from parents. I enjoyed receiving some very creative work responses to activities I posted on Seesaw and lovey to see how well the children and parents are adapting learning tasks at home.
By Ruth Cameron: Room 13 students have taken to remote learning from home, very well. They are enthusiastically checking in and sending messages through Seesaw if they have any questions or need clarification of the set learning tasks. Our parents are to be congratulated on their support and positivity toward our current reality. We have had phone calls, emails and messages of appreciation and support. We are very aware that every family has their own needs, demands and complexities and we thank you all for your flexibility and understanding. We look forward to working with our students and their families to provide as much continuity of learning as possible.
By Rhianna McPherson: It’s been great working together with the parents to support home learning with the Reception/ Year 1 students. I have loved how they have taken the tasks and adapted them to suit their home environment. I received lots of photos and videos from students and saw lots of yummy cooking, beach expeditions, home science and STEM activities. They have also done an amazing job of working their way through the work books set. I’ve been really grateful for the parents understanding and support.
By Sharon Lancaster: I am thrilled with how the children’s parents have taken up the challenge! They have made resources for their children to use, and from the photos I’ve received, the children are thoroughly enjoying their home learning!
By Cathy Stevens: So far, so good! The kids have been great with most completing set tasks and sending them through. Great support from the parents as well, as they might be juggling their own work and more than 1 child!
By Jessica Nagel: I have been finding the home learning and contact with parents working really well with those who are engaging. I have been seeing lots of photos and videos around how they are going. I’ve been constantly in touch with those who are engaging. I have provided some additional learning to students who can work with harder tasks and I have sent home additional websites parents can engage with or leave their children working on independently. I have had a few personal positive comments about how we as teachers are working through this process.
By Leah Watkins: Our students in Room 18 and 19 have positively responded to the work set for them at home. They have been completing tasks and asking for help if they need it. They have been sending through their work for us to see which has been great.
