Seacliff Primary School’s ‘Student Environmental Action Group’

Recently, our Student Environmental Group from rooms 13, 11, 17 and 18, consisting of Eve, Skye, Jordan, Zali, Maddy and Lyla, attended an all-day event at Happy Valley Primary School. The day provided opportunities for students to meet students from other schools, observe projects undertaken by school community groups, work collaboratively on tasks and to engage in workshops with a range of presenters.
Session 1: Sustainability Walk
Students and teachers enjoyed an interactive tour of Happy Valley’s sustainable vegetable and fruit gardens and water catchment area planted with Indigenous species. These areas are predominantly maintained by school community volunteers, students and teachers.
Session 2: School Project Focus Planning
Students worked in their school teams to continue their Project Planning for their work back at school. Seacliff students are working with Mr Porter and Indigenous Consultant, Mr Corey Turner to develop a sustainable garden that incorporates existing natural aspects of our grounds and also uses Indigenous plant species, native to our local areas.
Session 3: Indigenous Perspectives Art
Indigenous Consultant, Mr Corey Turner spoke about Indigenous art and culture in relation to the local Adelaide Plains, Kaurna people. Students were then supplied with materials to create their own ‘story’ using a range of materials and incorporating Indigenous symbols.
