Seacliff Beach Dune Planting – City of Holdfast Bay Annual Revegetation
Year 3/4 – Room 10 – 5th May 2021
Since the late 1990s the City of Holdfast Bay has been working to rehabilitate the Seacliff to Brighton Dunes, to reinstate vegetation and to re-establish indigenous plant colonies. The school was invited by the City of Holdfast Bay to be involved in the volunteer and education program, therefore the Year 3/4s of Room 10 and Year 4/5s of Room 11 took up the opportunity. The students were very enthusiastic to contribute to this worthwhile environmental project, which is in their own ‘backyard’. This integrates well with our school and local community environmental focus this year.
Our session was introduced with some background to the project, how to care for the dunes and a demonstration of how to plant the shrubs. There have been lots of changes to improve environmental sustainability over the years at the dunes and you can see in the photo that they are now using cardboard tree guards to protect the plants so that they will biodegrade as the plants grow stronger.
The whole group of volunteers, students and parent helpers were photographed at the end of our 90 minute session.
Some student’s photos are displayed alongside the students impressions of the activities which are shared below.

At our Seacliff Dunes planting excursion I took extra gloves so that other people could have them if they didn’t bring any of their own. Imee, Kingston and Jett borrowed my gloves and we all had a great time. My mum was there to help too. By Ruby
On the 5th of May Room 10 teacher, Ms B, the students and 3 parents walked to the Seacliff Dunes. Thanks to the parents for coming to help and to Mr Wallis for coming to walk back to school with us. We planted native plants that normally grow on the beach on the dunes but they don’t grow there naturally anymore as they have been damaged by people. The plants were fun to plant. We used trowels and gardening gloves. In the picture you can see Imee, Penny and our supervisor Alex who works at Holdfast Bay as an Environmental Coordinator and she arranged our visit to the dunes. On the Holdfast Bay dune planting day our class went to the Seacliff Dunes to do some gardening on the coast. It was to help keep the dunes from blowing away. In the picture you can see our group, all wearing gloves to protect our hands. Our group was made up of Atticus, Cruze, Noah and Andrea who was our supervisor. Thankyou to the local volunteers who came to help with the dunes planting day.

On Wednesday of Week 2 we walked from school (and back) to Seacliff Beach and we planted some plants in the dunes. Clare, a Councilor from Holdfast Bay helped Lincoln do 8 plants and Mitch do 8plants and Mitchell do 7 plants. We really enjoyed doing this activity on a sunny but cool day. Thanks to Clare as she was very helpful.

This is Aria, Lilly and Jenna from Room 10 and we were planting scrubs at the Seacliff Dunes on Wednesday 5th May.
We were very excited to be there and we really enjoyed the planting with the volunteers helping.
We liked planting the ones with the pots because they were more of a challenge.
