Room 5 – ‘Hair Raising’ Learning Experiences
The students in Room 5 have been researching the Polar Regions to springboard their learning into other curriculum areas. Over the period of this term, the students have used an integrated learning approach to investigate penguins.
They have done a variety of art lessons, using various mediums to highlight their creativity.
Using their investigative skills they have researched and completed a P.M.I about living in the Polar Regions.
They have investigated different ways of animal adaptations, integrated with the Book Week theme of ‘Curious Creatures’ and drawn a musk oxen. The class then collectively investigated facts about them and the students wrote their own facts.
They have done various maths and literacy activities associated with this topic.
The students did a science experiment using coloured pencils and oil based crayons to test the effect of water on a penguin’s feathers.
Also, working with their buddies, the students have done a STEM challenge:
- The father penguin has been called away. He must leave the egg unattended.
- Can you find a way to design, make and care for your baby penguin egg?
The students were each given their own hard boiled egg and asked to look after their baby penguin during their lunch break.
This was definitely a hair raising challenge for them!
